Hi all,
Here it is. The official 2001 Report. The 8th TARGET event was held
at the Mirage.
Saturday, 4/21.
I gather up all of my goodies and head down to the poker room.
A large number of players show up for the brunch. Could the comps
have something to do with that? Mike Osborne saves the day by getting
us out of the short-but-slow comp line and into the buffet.
Back to the poker room. I break out the random table assignments. I hand out the TARGET pins (Patrick helped design them, BTW). Jeff Siegal helps out with taking notes. Richard White is the TD. Donna Harris helped set up the tournament. Charles Haynes took some nice pictures: http://www.edgeplay.org/~haynes/target_2001/
After a quick misdeal, we are underway.
Peter Secor brought plastic protractors to measure tilt! Several times during the tournament, a player would take a bad beat and have a protractor thrown to him.
A record field of 39 players were dealt in for TARGET 2001.
The tables:
Table 1 | Table 2 | Table 3 | Table 4 |
---|---|---|---|
Michael Hall | Kevan Garrett | Bob Blaeser | Roger Park |
Dave Orr | Patti Beadles | Jeff Okamoto | Beth Even |
George Wattman | Tom Goodwin | Mike Osborne | John Davis |
Charles Haynes | Patri Friedman | Dan Sammartino | Dave McVay |
Clark Olson | Jerry Gerner | Bill Chen | Chris Colby |
Tony Goldstein | Rick Harris | Eric Holtman | Russ Fox |
Devin Moss | Robert Sadowski | John McClenny | Ray Klann |
Alan Bostick | Ken Kubey | Keith Bronson | Peter Secor |
Andy Latto | Sabyl Cohen | Patrick Milligan | Steve Daniel |
Charles Bradley | Paul Phillips | Jim Geary |
MATS Winner Rick Harris was the first one out when his KT flops a K but was outkicked by Kevan Garrett's KJ. Rick got two rolls of Life Savers, a fishing game, and a $10 Mirage coin for being the first finisher.
SCATS Winner Sabyl Cohen was next out with AJ against Patti's 10-2. Please tell me Patti was the BB.
Paul Phillips was next out. Don't ask me why I let Paul play. He stole a couple of pots from me and then gave all his chips to Patti.
Bill Chen was 9th out. This is noteworthy in that he didn't win the tournament. I told Bill he couldn't use his time machine.
Michael Hall was the 14th player knocked out. Not bad for a guy who was asleep at the time. Michael is one of the brightest people I know, but apparently he had trouble figuring out the difference between "AM" and "PM" when setting his alarm clock. I got a chuckle out of that.
Jim Geary was 16th out. From all reports, he was the favorite going in on three consecutive hands, but had beats put on him on all three.
Ken Kubey (that's me) was eliminated in 21st place taking AT against Kevan's AK. I'll keep running this thing till we get it right.
23rd out was Dave Orr when his 22 was rivered when the board paired a 2nd time. I hate when that happens.
Mike Osborne was out next with 99 against two people with AKs. Rob's AK made a flush.
Patti went out in 12th place with Presto! (55) going down to Tom's double Presto! (TT).
Chris Colby went out in 11th and the final table was set:
Name | Stack |
---|---|
Rob Sadowski | 11600 |
Tom Goodwin | 10400 |
Eric Holtman | 5200 |
Ray Klann | 6800 |
Peter Secor | 10700 |
Alan Bostick | 7400 |
Charles Haynes | 7000 |
Kevan Garrett | 8200 |
Jeff Okamoto | 7300 |
Dan Sammartino | 3500 |
A deal was made to give 7th place $300 and 8th place $200.
A dealer named Rob was having a lot of fun dealing to us. He was wearing the protractors from his ears. I gave him a TARGET pin.
BTW, at some point someone mentioned to me that Peter had been drinking. I said that that comment was redundant. Same goes for Eric too.
Alan went out in 10th place taking K3 against Charles' A6 sooted.
Dan was out next. Jeff's KK beat his JT. Dan got the "Lee Jones" buffet comp as a consolation prize.
Kevan died in the big blind with gumbo, but got his $200 entry fee back.
Rob went out next. His A8 was beaten by Charles' pocket jacks. Rob won $300.
6th place belonged to Jeff. Eric's KQ improved to beat Jeff's 77. Jeff won $401.
Peter won $500 for taking 5th place when his 32 (yes, he had been drinking) was beaten by Ray's 95. Please tell me this was blind battle.
Charles was out next. The bachelor beat the dog (JKo beat K9). I thought Charles played as well as anyone. He received $550 in 4th.
Tom Goodwin came in 3rd with KJ when Ray's Q5 flopped a pair. Tom won $599.
Eric Holtman finished 2nd and won four $500 lammers and $100.
Ray took the chip lead on the final hand and also received a TOC qualification along with the four $500 lammers and $100.
Congratulations to Ray and Eric!!!
A bunch of us meet up for the craps tour. We end up at the California. Kevan and I are next to each other at the table. Jaeger, despite all of my pleading, is betting the "don't" at the other end of the table. Frank gets the dice first and holds them for a good 20 minutes. He rolls a lot of come-out craps, so it wasn't as great a roll as it could have been. Jennifer (craps virgin) is next. She makes her first pass and then rolls every number in the world several times costing Jaeger many bets. She hits a couple of hardways for me. Jeff is next. He makes a key point when I have $40 on the pass line. Jaeger has called out for a rebuy or two. I introduce Kevan to the $5 "Horn-high-yo" bet. I tell him up front that it is a terrible bet. He points to the "Big 6/8" and says "It isn't worse than this, is it?" I reply that I am pretty sure that it *is* worse than that. Despite the warning, we make the bet several times winning about half of the time. Kevan even makes the bet for the dealers a few times hitting at least twice. Chris and Peter hit a couple hardways and/or come-out 11's for me. Kevan and I were both up around $150. I'm sure we tipped away at least $100 between us, but you can't put a value on the fun we had.
Ray played in the $1500 Omaha-8 event. He played for 6 hours finishing in 120th place out of 307 players. The rest of the money was used up in sats with nothing exciting to report.
Here are the first lines of Eric's TARGET report:
"I sold my lammers for cash, and put the $2,100 on the Don't Pass. Immediate natural 7, IGHN.
Oh, no, wait, that's not right."
Eric played in the $1500 Stud event on Monday, but went out just before the dinner break. He used up the remaining money in sats. He was in great shape in one taking KK against TT for 2/3rds of the chips on the table. In his words: "River T, IGHN."
In the other he started well hitting a set of 7's, but then took AK against AA and AQ against QQ. Oh well.
Thanks to everyone who played in TARGET and a big Thanks to all of the folks that sent checks in early. That really helps me a lot.
This year's TARGET went very well. Everyone I talked to said they had a good time.
I'd also like to thank Jeff Siegal for taking notes and helping me out setting things up. And thanks to Patrick fro helping with the pins!
I'll be sending out a survey soon.
I hope everyone had a good time during the TARGET weekend. TARGET will be held in April or May again next year. I'll get the word out as soon as I can. Can't wait for TARGET 2002 :-)
