Subject: The king wore no clothes From: dmk12845@aol.com (dave keiser) Newsgroups: rec.gambling.poker Date: Mon, Mar 18, 2002 12:10 PM Message-ID: <98f7b687.0203181210.6ed0b2ef@posting.google.com> The most deplorable thing i have seen in playing tournament poker happened in the fourth hour of the PPM cruise. Two tables behind me there was a ruling by David Lamb that set off this incident. Here's how it went. It was the second hand of a new leval(300-600) and the player out of shute #1 raised to $400 after he and all the players had a brain fart, not realizing that the small and big blind had put in the 100-200 blinds of the previous leval. The dealer didn't notice it either. It was quickly pointed out thal they were at the 300-600 leval and here's where it started. After the usual trading of opinions (seeing who could yell loudest) Dave made the decision that the blinds should be ajusted to the current leval and he could raise. End of story right. WRONG. The king of poker,Barry Shulman charged the podium and started screaming at Dave Lamb that he made the wrong decision,i mean screaming at the top of his lungs. Everybody in the room was stuned from Mike Sexton ,who was standing next to Dave, to the 70 players players partisapating in the first flight. Thank God the camera crew was outside interviewing someone at the time or it would have been recorded for posterity and the outside world would have seen the man that's in charge of cleaning up the image of poker and is always talking about us going mainstream, getting social acceptence and corperate sponorships blow the whole deal himself. Here's a couple of choices words out of his rant that had many on the cruise 1. He screamed " IF I WIN THIS TOURNAMENT I'M GOING TO STIFF THE DEALERS". Exact words. Then he went on personally berating Dave Lamb and made this statment "This isn't one of your $5 Reno tournaments,we're playing for a million bucks" End of story, right. Wrong. As Barry was turning away to return to his seat Dave said they could talk outside about this or go somewhere. No brainer Shulman took this as a threat and turned around, charged back up on the podium, face turning purple, veins in his neck sticking out, looking like the lowest gutter thug, and starts physically imtimidating Dave and saying we can go outside now and a few other choice words. At this time,I who was sitting at the table #2 next to the podium yelled time out several times. Shulman finally went to his seat. May god strick me dead if this isn't the exact way if happened. Who does this man think he is? To the fifty rudy's of the poker world(the dot. comers, as Mike was calling us) we were wondering WTF. To the WCP's and Linda and crew who fear this jerk ,it was just another chapter in the growing ledgend of the most hated man in poker. I tried to look past what had happened to see the underlying emotions of the uglyest incident in the history of tournament poker. When he said he was going to stiff the dealers,i looked over at his chips and couldn't see them, so i stood up and saw he had $2000. Acouple friends on the table that i talked to later said that he was playing poorly and had brought his "C" game to the table, which means he wasn't mentally focused and was out of control of his emotions from before he played. And when he made the comment about about Dave and the $5 Reno tournaments someone told me later that Dave had recently been on the cover of Poker Digest. Naw,i told myself,he could'nt be that low that just because a person gets his minute in the sun in the rival rag the he would hate him didn't ring right either. How could he do this to Linda and Mike the WCP's,the Rudys, and the guests watching i have no idea. I talked to many many players, high and low and it came out that he has been acting like this for a while and it comes to problems away from the poker world. Well, Barry, don't you think it's time to resolve those problems and make amends. I just got home and saw you post on a different thread like nothing had happened.Sorry But,no sweeping this under the rug. You've disgraced yourselp and insulted all of us that worked so hard to make the cruise and the entire poker world, of which you lead. You've come to a fork in the road and which path are you going to take. The same one or look to make long overdue changes in what's bothering you so much and perhaps strive to be happy( everybody deserves that). You also have the obligation to make amends to all of us you lead. I would suggest you admit you've were wrong if you sincerly feel that way and a 50k donation(to be added to the prize pool) on the next dealers tournament. The brain trust reviewed Dave's decision and came to the conclusion that he was 100% right. I who have nothing but a lot of problems and little money feel sorry for you who has everything. Good luck Barry :)
